Caracas 04.01.07 | After yesterday's cabinet shake up, whereby Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel and Interior Minister Jessy Chacon were replaced by former electoral chief Jorge Rodriguez and deputy Pedro Carreņo, national guard troops went this morning to the Ministry of Finance to dismiss Nelson Merentes and his closest collaborators. Rodrigo Cabezas is to be appointed as the new Finance Minister, however what strikes as odd is the manner used by president Chavez for the new year's ministerial replacements. As I write these notes former Minister Merentes briefs the press about the changes. The move is believed to be the beginning of an anti-corruption drive that president Chavez had in mind. Former Minister Merentes was in charge of the Argentinean bond deals that according to financial sources was a phenomenal source of corruption.
