Mexico's Senate requests investigation into Venezuela's interference in López Obrador's campaign
By Aleksander Boyd
London 23.03.06 | La Cronica reports today that Mexico's Senate has introduced a request with the Federal Electoral Institute, the Governorship Secretary, the Foreign Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office to investigate the alleged interference of Venezuela in the campaign of candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and his links with subversive groups.
Sources in Mexico argue that AMLO travelled to Maracaibo, Venezuela in 2004 to secretly meet with Hugo Chavez. Requests for information made to intelligence agencies of both countries have been unfruitful. It is believed that should a substantiated link between Chavez and AMLO be revealed it would diminish greatly the latter's chances at Mexico's presidency.
