The board of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), meeting in New York City, has issued a resolution urging the government of Venezuela "to respect freedom of speech and press freedom and to ensure that both the media and journalists can fully exercise them."
In addition, WAN recognized the courage and commitment shown by Venezuelan publishers, editors, journalists and other workers of the media, and warned against the orientation of the Radio and Television Social Responsibility draft bill and the Citizens’ Participation draft bill, calling on the National Assembly not to pass bills aimed at regulating the contents of information.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a delegation of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), in Caracas, headed by its president, Jack Fuller, also urged Venezuelan authorities to guarantee both the media and reporters free access to information during the impending signature drive.
